Spotting Storm Chasers

Here are a few tips you should know in order to find these roofing contractors –

Try to be a little patient – It is natural to be in a hurry to locate a roofing contractor near you. Everyone tells you to hurry up to avoid potential damages to walls and contents inside a building. A bad roofing contractor can do more damage to your property in the long run. Be a little patient, and you will be saved from contractors who just pretend to be local while drifting from one place to the other.

Take a look at their trucks and find out if there are any out-of-state tags on them – If a roofing contractor is not local, his vehicle won’t be registered locally. Such contractors are in town for just a few days to handle roofing jobs. Your roof may just get some poor fixes if you hire such contractors who are on the move.

Do not believe someone right away when he claims to be local – Thoroughly quiz roofing contractors over the phone or during an in-person visit to investigate their claims. Always ask the contractor to provide you with a promise of return for further repair work if needed. Do not believe anything except the written word in such deals. If a roofing contractor has left the town or city, long term warranties will be of little or no use at all for you.

Check if roofing contractors engaged in local roofing jobs have a local license (This does not apply in Texas yet) – In order to do this, you can ask a roofing contractor to produce a copy of his liability insurance and workman’s compensation license. If he does not have one or both, you should consider hiring someone else.

Make sure that your roofing contractor is properly insured – Many contractors will just try to manipulate you in order to cut expenses in such cases. Always check insurance copies and see if they are valid till the date of the roofing job.

Try to avoid signing any type of contingency agreement with a contractor – Do not sign such documents if possible. These documents are very vague. It is never clear as to what exactly is being promised in the agreement. Do your own research and find some reputable roofing contractors in your locality.
